The Laws of Life

When you struggle with mental illness, (hell, even if you don’t) sometimes it can feel like Murphy’s Law is ruling our lives. That everything that could possibly go wrong is going wrong, and if for the off chance things seem to be good, then we must have overlooked something, right?

Let me explain a little deeper. Imagine yourself in the following scenario.

Your alarm doesn’t go off, and you sleep in too late to shower before work. You rush out of the house, locking your keys inside. You miss the bus, and when you go to call a cab you realize your phones been cut off, you forgot to pay your cellphone bill, again. You can feel the anger creeping up inside you as you walk to work in the rain. When you finally get to work you’re about to explode, you bark at the doorman, and stomp up the stairs to your office, slamming your door closed without saying hello to your assistant. While collapsing into your seat you spill coffee down your brand new shirt. You’re distracted and unproductive all day, getting nothing done at all.

How do you feel? What is the first thing you think after reading that? A few carefully selected curse words I’m sure, but what else? How about…

“Of course this would happen to me.”

“I have the worst luck.”

“I should have just stayed home.”

“Thats just life, kicking me while I’m down.”

If that isn’t Murphy’s Law, I don’t know what is, and maybe days like the one I just made up happen to you all the time. Maybe you’re in a tough spot, and the universe is challenging you. Well I’m here to help (or try to at least). You see, I don’t believe in Murphy’s Law, I believe in Einstein’s Law of Attraction.

“Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get into that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy, this is physics.” – Albert Einstein

The way I see it, the world is full of different energies. We pass energies back and forth, exchanging good energy for bad, and vice versa. However we are most attracted to those people who exchange similar energies to us. Lets look at me, for example, I try my very best to stay positive and to only put positive energies back out into the world, which is why I’m more attracted to positive people, than I am negative people. Make sense? Focusing in on your energy, and the energy you spread, can easily take a bad day and turn it around.

Disclaimer: Now, I’m not saying you need to smile and be happy every time you miss the bus and I’m definitely not saying you’re never going to have a bad day again. For I’m somebody who struggles with depression, and sometimes it seems like I have more bad days than good. So I completely understand how difficult it can be to find the positive in a negative situation. However, I do believe that we have the power to change our own lives.

You’ll notice that Einstein didn’t say, “Match the frequency of the reality you have”, but rather, “Match the frequency of the reality you want”. So you’re not really stuck in that rut, you’re just tuned into a lower frequency.

I realize I’m making this sound real easy, and you’re probably rolling your eyes at me, but I assure you, you can do it. When I notice I’m feeling low, and I’m ready to make a change, I turn my focus inward and reflect on my own energies. I then take a few deep, centring breaths, and I find something good, something I’m grateful for, and hold on to it. I focus on that one thing until I feel my mind clear and my energy increase. Turning one situation around isn’t going to change your whole life, but it’s a start.

Let’s look back at our situation from earlier in this post, and try to find a few positives.

After spilling coffee down your shirt, you take a breath and remember you have a spare hanging behind your door. You thank yourself for being prepared, and leaving it here months ago for cases like today. Now that your mind is clear you have a very productive day.

Lets back up.

Instead of yelling at the doorman and ruining their day, you stop and say hello. You focus in on the smalltalk and allow the simplicity of it make you feel a little better. This conversation adds a pep to your step, just enough energy to not collapse into your office chair.

Lets back up a little further.

You missed your bus, and your phone is out of commission. Take a breath, refocus, and use this rare cellphone-less walk to work to look up and appreciate nature. You feel surrounded by beauty, so much more positive you don’t bark at the doorman.

Even further?

You wake up, without your alarm going off. No, you don’t have time to shower, but you still have time for your commute. Take a second, and take your internal clock for waking you up when it did, and giving your body a little extra rest. You focus inward and realize you needed that rest, and more. You take the morning off and stay in bed a few more hours, going to work that afternoon much more productive and feeling refreshed.

Moral of the story? Remember to breath. Taking a second to stop and just breath gives you time to check your emotions, your mood, and your energy…..and there is no shame in needing to take a day to yourself.

So next time you feel like life it kicking you while you’re down, I want you to remember this, and try to see the situation from a different perspective.

Find the good, hold on tight, match to the higher frequency.




If you could have any superpower, what would it be?


This was my answer for as long as I can remember. There was always something I wanted to hide away from, whether is was an awkward situation, an uncomfortable conversation, or just my own spinning mind. Wishing I could fade away, out of existence became a daily ritual. I felt that my life was a disappointment, that I was disappointing everyone around me, by just being here. I’m pretty sure everyone agrees that it’s better to have someone mad at you, than for them to be disappointed in you. It is not a good feeling knowing you’ve disappointed someone, it’s even worse when you’ve disappointed yourself.

Lets backtrack 5 or 6 years; I was always know as the heartless one with my friends. They wouldn’t come to me when they were upset because they knew they wouldn’t get much emotion out of me. I kind of let this define me and I got really good at keeping my feelings to myself.

Cut to present day and all of a sudden, I find myself standing on this figurative ledge, telling this captivating person how I feel about them and I get shot down.


I started to fall backwards into my old ways of wanting to crawl under a rock. I was so disappointed in myself, I opened up to someone about my feelings. Why did I do that? I gave up on everything I believed in! I should have just kept it to myself. I felt like such an idiot. My mind started to spiral.

Then something weird happened.. life went on.

Of course, I was extremely embarrassed, and I still am *silently praying that he never reads this* but at the same time I’m also kind of proud. I did it! I opened up to someone! I told someone how I felt! Sure, it didn’t exactly go as planned, but it was still a big accomplishment. It’s a step in the right direction, away from the shadows of my safe, hiding place.

Somewhere along the journey of these past 6 years I guess something changed. I guess, I changed. I’m not exactly sure when I became this person who declares her feelings to attractive men then writes about the embarrassment of it on the internet, but whatever, I’ll go with it.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Invisibility. The ability to travel through time and space.

I’m a 1 in 5. Break the stigma.

One of the worst side effects of mental illness is frustration. The frustration can start to take over your life, slowly pushing you into oblivion. 

When I was first diagnosed with depression I was confused. I’ve had a great life so far, and everything has always been so easy. How can I be depressed? Doctors would ask me questions to try and figure out why. Are your parents divorced? No. Did you go through something traumatic? No. Were you ever abused? No. Did you have a rough childhood? No. Do have friends? No. I mean, yes, great ones! There were questions upon questions, all of which I seemed to have the wrong answer to. There wasn’t a reason for my depression, it was just some sort of chemical imbalance. This was the start of the frustration. I was constantly wondering why I felt the way I did. It was frustrating not being able to sleep because I’m too awake, then even more frustrating not being able to get out of bed the next morning. It drove me crazy having to get blood work done, and have to go to councilors, and psychologists, and psychiatrists, and everything coming back “normal”. When this is all happening to you, you get used to being told it’s just the way you are, and not in a cutesy Bruno Mars sort of way.

Frustration is often tied with guilt. Which in turn is another one of the worst side effects. You’ll be stuck in your room, with blackout drapes shutting out the sun, frustrated that you’re feeling so down on such a beautiful day, when your friend asks you to hang out. You get out of bed, get dressed, put on makeup, then crawl back in bed, you can’t go. You say you’re sick. You’re friend says, “Again!? You’re always sick!”, and you’re struck with a wave of guilt. You become really good at listening for the sighs of frustration when telling people you have to bail. But passing your frustration on to other people doesn’t take it away from you, it just adds guilt to the cocktail of emotions you’re already feeling. 

I wish I could lie to you and say that your friends and family are awful, and they don’t understand, and how could they? They’re perfect. But I can’t for 2 reasons: 1) I’ve said that lie to myself so many times, that if I say it once more my nose may actually grow so big I topple over from the weight and die. and 2) It’s not true at all and if you believe it is, you’re oblivious.

(Would you look at that? A flawless segue!)

Oblivion is defined as the state of being unaware of what is happening around you. Based on that definition, I think the majority of humanity lives in oblivion. You never really know what could be happening to someone right next to you. There are times in my life where I was not only unaware of what was happening around me, but what was happening inside me. Thankfully, I have finally crawled out of the tunnel of oblivion I was stuck in. Now I realize what is happening inside me, and what is happening around me. I guess you could call this my “spiritual awakening”, but I’m just going to say I took my head out of my ass. I’m going to try to say the next sentence without sounding completely out-to-lunch. It’s as if i finally see things for not what they are but for what they have become. Let me explain. I don’t just see my best friends as people, I see them as these amazing people who has gone through so much and still remain so strong. It’s as if I finally understand what living is supposed to feel like, and I don’t want to go back.

I can’t stress enough how important understanding mental illness is, especially if you are someone who doesn’t have a mental illness. 1 in 5 people live with mental illness, so more than likely someone you know is dealing with a little more than you think. I personally believe that it is almost more important to understand mental illness if you do not have a mental illness yourself. This way you can know how your friends or family members are feeling, and what is going on inside them; Which is something they will often be questioning themselves. If you do have a mental illness yourself, reading articles and doing research is one of the best things you can do. Not only will it help you fully understand things that are, or may start, happening to you, but it will make you realize you’re not alone. Sorry to break it to you, but you’re really not that special. You’re a 1 in 5, not a 1 in 1,000,000.
